Kircher, Athanasius
The Jesuit priest Athanasius Kircher is often regarded as the discoverer of fluorescence. He observed that an aqueous infusion of wood extract of Lignum nephriticum exhibited blue color by reflected light and yellow color by transmitted light; the blue color is a type of light emission (fluorescence). Perhaps, he is also the first microscopist. In his "Ars magna lucis et umbrae" (1646), he used the term "smicroscopium", an instrument being named "Vitra muscaria" (lea glass)
