Tumor markers: selection and applicability
Increased levels of tumor markers can be indicative of tumor development or tumor growth, but they can be also observed in a number of benign diseases. Lack of tumor marker increase, however, will not exclude a respective disease. Tumor markers are mainly used in therapy monitoring or in the detection of a tumor relapse. Rarely, tumor markers are appropriate for the detection of tumors.
Comment: measurement of tumor markers should be only followed on consultation of the attending physician.
Some special form can be helpful for the choice of a given tumor marker depending on search criteria such as
(1) area of indication,
(2) organ or tumor type and
(3) histology or symptoms
The proposed tumor markers and their applicability for diagnostic purpose, staging, prognosis and therapy monitoring are then affiliated.
